Although his record of seven championships is tied with Dale Earnhardt and Jimmie Johnson, Petty holds the records for most wins, poles, career starts, wins in a season (27), consecutive wins (10), and Daytona 500 wins (7), among other distinctions.
The most consecutive wins in NASCAR history is 10 and that was accomplished by Richard Petty in 1967.

Geoff Bodine suffered, hands-down, the worst wreck in NASCAR history at the 2000 Daytona 250 and it is most likely not even close. Can I race in NASCAR at 14?
The minimum age for a NASCAR license is 14 years old, so no one under that age can race in a NASCAR-sanctioned division at a NASCAR-sanctioned track.
Licensed participants must be at least 13 years old and may participate through the year of their 16th birthday. All runs must be made with an approved licensed supervising adult, who must be the participant's parent or legal guardian or 25 years of age or older with a valid state driver's license.
NASCAR License Costs
A NASCAR license, along with needing to prove enough experience in racing, has a cost of $110, and the cost for late models is $205. This is the starting price for a crew member license. NASCAR driver licenses are much more expensive, costing as much as $2,000 per year.
How was this? The Daytona soared over 200 mph and was no longer allowed to compete in NASCAR event racing. This was first accomplished by famed NASCAR driver Buddy Baker who was the one to surpass 200 miles per hour on March 24, 1970, at the famed Talladega track.
Not only does Petty hold almost every positive NASCAR record — most starts, poles, victories, top-5s, top-10s, races led and laps led — he also hold the dubious record for most losses. Take away his 200 victories from his 1,185 starts and you have 985 losses. Nobody's ever gonna get close to that, either.
