Will cloudy fish tank water go away?
As the new aquarium goes through the initial break-in cycle, it is not unusual for the water to become cloudy or at least a little hazy. It will take several weeks to several months to establish bacterial colonies that can clear waste from the water. Over time, that cloudiness will resolve itself.
During this process, beneficial bacteria build up in order to consume the ammonia being produced, hence causing the water to be milky. This cloudiness is caused by free floating beneficial bacteria which are not harmful for your fishes, and should go away when they settle down – usually takes about 1-2 days.
A 25% change is a good partial water change. Check temperature, dechlorinate and pour slowly back into the tank, and you should have no problems. If there is an emergency like high ammonia and nitrite, change 50% on a daily basis until those levels have come back down.
This can be caused by: Overfeeding – the bacteria feed on uneaten food in the aquarium. Overcrowding – too many fish for the volume of the tank. Poor filtration – not enough filtration for your size tank and/or number of fish.

Cold cloudy water
If you find that you're only experiencing cloudy water from one of your faucets, remove the aerator, clean it with a solution of 50% water and 50% vinegar, rinse, and reinstall to see if the problem persists.
Don't add fish to a cloudy water tank as there can be numerous reasons behind cloudy water conditions, like a bacterial bloom and increased levels of chemicals in the water. Bacterial bloom can result in oxygen deficiency. Consider letting the tank water to get settle first and then add fish.
CLOUDY WATER = HIGH WASTE (Ammonia / Nitrite) + LOW BENEFICIAL BACTERIA (Nitrosomonas sp. / Nitrobacter sp.) It can be assumed that, if the water was to be tested, the test would show that waste (toxic Ammonia & Nitrite) is present in the water.
The cloudiness you are experiencing is probably one of two things. First, overfeeding your fish can cloud your water as the uneaten food is allowed to decompose. At each feeding you should feed no more than what your fish can eat in one to two minutes. Overstocking the tank (too many fish) also can cause cloudy water.
Any cloudiness will dissipate in a few hours. Place your fish back in the tank when you think it is ready. Sit back and enjoy your clean tank.
Should I change tank water after fish dies?
A 50–60% water change should be conducted every 5–6 weeks to prevent any type of nitrate accumulations. If a fish dies or there is an outbreak of some disease, go for a 10% water change.
Municipal/Tap Water
Most municipalities treat drinking water with either chlorine or chloramine for disinfection purposes. Chlorine is extremely toxic to fish and needs to be completely removed before the water comes in contact with fish. Chloramine is chlorine bonded to ammonia, both of which are detrimental to fish.
The only exception is if you add too much water clarifier. If this is the case, your water clarifier is going to go on a clumping spree and will very likely turn your water a cloudy brown color.
Probably the least likely cause of your hazy or cloudy water, certain inorganics can cause aquarium water to be less clear. High concentrations of phosphates (PO4) as well as dissolved minerals (very hard water, silicates, Iron, etc.) can prevent a fish tank from looking crystal clear.
Clear Lakes
The clarity is generally due to low levels of algae, which occurs when the soils surrounding a lake are fast-draining and healthy.
Unless excess organic materials are removed, a partial water change will not clear cloudy water over the long term .
Try a sediment filter.
If your water is from a municipal system, installing an inexpensive sediment filter on your faucet will probably solve your cloudy water problem. The filters use activated carbon cartridges to trap particles that improve the purity and taste of your water.
Most of the time, the cloudy water effect will dissipate after a few minutes once the water settles. If you notice that water from all of your home's water faucets appears cloudy, it probably is caused by a pressurized municipal system.
Bacteria Bloom
The cloudiness, caused by initial bacteria growth, is not harmful to tank inhabitants, and will clear on its own. Have patience! If your water does not clear after 10 days, consult with your Aquarium Adventure Fish Specialist.
This is called “bacterial bloom.” This cloudiness is caused by initial good bacterial growth and is not harmful to your fish. It will clear up on its own. As you will see, you need this bacteria growth for a healthy aquarium.
What does bacterial bloom look like?
If you have a bacterial bloom in your aquarium, the water becomes cloudy and turns milky within a few days. The clarity of the water is significantly reduced, but no floating particles are visible to the naked eye.
Common causes of cloudy salt water pools
Incorrect pH levels: The pH level of your pool water should be between 7.2 and 7.6. If it's outside of this range, it can cause the water to become cloudy. To fix this, you'll need to adjust the pH levels using a pH test kit and chemicals.
Levels below 7.0 indicate acidic water. Levels above 7.8 mean that the water is too alkaline or basic. Both instances can lead to a cloudy pool.
Cloudy pool water is caused by 4 common pool issues: poor filtration, low chlorine levels, poor water chemistry, or contaminants in the water, like debris or algae.
Too much light causes algae bloom, which turns your tank water into an unsightly green color. To prevent this, here's what you can do: Place your tank somewhere that avoids direct sunlight. Don't leave aquarium lights on all day.
- Table of Contents.
- Regular Maintenance.
- The Correct Filtration.
- Eradicate Algae From Your Aquarium.
- Reduce Nitrates and Phosphates.
- Use a Water Treatment or Clarifier.
- Reduce Waste in Your Tank.
- Maintaining Crystal Clear Water.
So, a salt treatment can very effectively eliminate all traces of algae from your freshwater tank. However, most freshwater aquarium plants don't respond well to salted water.
